New Delhi: Locked up inside their home and unfed for almost six months, two sisters were rescued from their north Delhi apartment this afternoon.
Police say, the two sisters Mamta (40) and Nirja Gupta (28) were brought out of their house after their neighbour called an emergency services number. They were found immensely dehydrated, in tattered clothes, when the NGO opened their house in Rohini. Mamta weighed just 15 kilos.
They have now been shifted to the Ambedkar Hospital. Doctors say both the sisters seem to be suffering from some psychological disorder. They say the older sister has multiple infected wounds, is dehydrated and appears to have not eaten since months. The young sister is unable to move her lower limbs say the doctors.
Neighbours say a strong stench from the apartment prompted them to call an NGO for help. The duo were living with their mother and Mamta's son and the entire family was suffering some psychological problem and possibly a financial crisis, they say.
In a similar case in April 2011, two sisters in their forties, were rescued from their Noida home where they had locked themselves in for months after their father's death and were found starving.
