Rajasthan rains: Army on standby as heavy rains predicted
Jaipur: With parts of Rajasthan receiving above normal rainfall in the last few days, the Army has been put on standby as a precautionary measure. However state authorities say the situation is under control and as of now there is no need for the Army to come in.

Sources in the Defence Ministry say the Army has been kept on alert and will move in whenever the civic administration feels the need to help with relief and rescue.

Two days of torrential showers has led to the death of 27 people in the state.

On August 9 Rajasthan had a rainfall deficit of 29.69 per cent.

However, the situation took a u-turn two days ago when torrential rains lashed the state. The state has now received 4.89 per cent above normal rainfall, officials said.

The Rajasthan government has asked the Central team, which was scheduled to arrive here to assess the drought situation, to postpone their visit for some time because of the heavy rains, they said.

The situation in Sikar district is alarming where many areas have been submerged. Sikar has seen over 200 mm of rain. About 225 children from a hostel have been moved after the hostel became waterlogged.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has appealed to people in the affected areas to keep patience and directed officials to make sure that relief work is done in a proper manner in all the areas facing trouble due to the rainfall.

"2,000 people in Jaipur have been shifted to safer places after Tuesday night with the help of district administration, police, civil defence volunteers, Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) and food packets are being distribution in all the affected areas and relief camps," the state minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Brijendra Singh Ola told PTI.

Mr Ola said that the state government was getting ready to handle drought crisis which was foreseen in the wake of deficit rainfall but the situation turned almost upside down and money had to be released to handle flood-like situation created after heavy rainfall during the last couple of days.

Jaipur, Ajmer and Sikar districts have been given Rs. 22 lakh each to handle situation aroused out of the torrential rains, and Rs. 17 lakh to Ajmer for repairing of roads and renovation of water resources.

Meanwhile, sowing in the state for Kharif crops has been done in 122 lakh hectare which is 82 per cent of the total targeted area for this season, an official of the agriculture department said.

He said that the recent rains have improved situation from agriculture point of view.

Mr Ola also said that the rainfall would play positive factor for agriculture sector as a whole.
