Gang-rape survivor positive and psychologically stable, say doctors

The condition of 23-year-old medical student 'Amanat' (NOT her real name), who was brutally gang-raped by six men on December 16, continues to be critical. Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital, where she is being treated, said Amanat's condition is serious, but she is conscious and is on the ventilator electively.

Doctors also said that Amanat has high fever and sepsis, a severe blood infection that can lead to organ failure, is one of their major concerns. They noted that the bilirubin level of the victim has increased to 6.3.

However, displaying much grit and determination, Amanat has reportedly told doctors that she wants to sit up and speak. She is said to be positive and psychologically stable.
The gang-rape survivor walked a few steps on Saturday night, but was back on the ventilator on Sunday after she developed breathing problems. Doctors also found some fluid accumulation in her lower abdomen and performed a minor surgery on Sunday.

Apart from concerns about infection, the other worrying factor is Amanat's platelet count, which has fallen to 19,000 per microlitre as per the last observation yesterday. She has been administered another four bottles of platelet-rich plasma.

Amanat's other vital statistics, such as blood pressure, pulse rate and urine output, however, are normal. Doctors treating her have repeatedly  praised what they call the fighting spirit of the young woman, who was left grievously injured in the brutal attack on her last Sunday.
