The ground water levels in Nuzvid and Musunur mandals in Krishna district reached an alarming level of above 50 metres, while the average water level in the district stands at 10 metres.

People are using 100 per cent ground water in Nuzvid and Musunur mandals and 50 to 70 per cent in Mylavaram, G Konduru, Totlavalluru, A Konduru, Agiripalli, Chatrai, Reddy-gudem and Vissannapet mandals of the district.
The ground water department officials started collecting ground water resource estimation after a gap of four years. The district was divided in 57 basins. The available ground water is 1,60,000 hectare metres and the present usage stands at 54,798 hectare metres leaving a balance resource of 1,10,000 hectare metres.
Speaking to this newspaper, deputy director of ground water department Mr A. Varaprasada Rao said that they organised Jalambadi programme last year to create awareness among school students on water conservation. He said that they are planning to create awareness among youth on water conservation by forming water awareness groups (WAY) in colleges. The students will carry out the water conservation campaign with a slogan “Join our way.”
The deputy director said that several college authorities and students are coming forward to carry out the concept of water conservation and a poster was released on Saturday. He said 60 additional piezometers would be installed in addition to the existing 40 piezometers to record the ground water levels in the district. He said as the government has instructed to estimate the water resou-rces taking 2010-11 as base year, the ground water department is planning to collect the data from various departments.
As part of it, hydrological data users group committee was conducted on Saturday. The collector is the chairman of the panel.
