Imagine the pleasure of sipping coffee in Welcome Hotel or tea at New India Hotel in Gandhinagar.
Now both the hotels have been closed down but the centres are still popularly known in the names of these hotels. Likewise, several important centres in Vijaya-wada city which were named after theatres and restaurants still bear the same name though the old theatres and hotels have been closed.
Multiplexes and shopping complexes are repla-cing the old structures in the process of development and increasing market value of land.
Now it is the turn of famous Leela Mahal theatre which is located opposite old RTC bus stand. The theatre is well-know for passing time as the passengers of both RTC and railways used to enjoy English movies until they catch a bus or train. Now the theatre is being demolished.
Eswar Mahal, which was later named Radha Theatre in Gandhinagar was also demolished. The Urvasi theatre complex which was well-known as Urvasi centre was remodelled and an Inox theatre complex came in it’s place.
The Maruthi, Saraswati and Sheshmahal theatres in One Town turned into shopping complexes several years ago. But these centres are popularly known with the old names of these theatres. Vijaya Talkies on Eluru Road was also demolished. The centre was famous in the name of Vijaya Talkies centre. The Kanaka Durga Talkies also on Eluru Road was closed several years ago. The Vinoda Talkies in Governorpet was also converted into a business house. Likewise, the Ajanta Hotel and Brindavan Hotel centres on Eluru Road are only for name’s sake. Fast food centres replaced several hotels due to increasing maintenance costs.
