Chennai: World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in Chennai on Wednesday. The Chief Minister rewarded two crore rupees to the five time world chess champion.
Accompanied by his wife Aruna, the King of Chess said, "the meeting with the Chief Minister was incredibly nice". Anand said he also thanked the Chief Minister for promoting Chess by introducing the game in schools for students in the age group of 7 to 17. This he said ''would produce next generation Chess players".
Asked about the plan in place to take Chess to schools, he said the state would start 32,000 Chess Clubs in schools across Tamil Nadu. Teachers would be trained, who in turn would teach the game to students. Anand also underscored the importance of corporate sponsorship to take chess to great levels.
